Looking for a challenge in 2017? Can you walk 24.5 miles in under 12 hours? Nepal Youth Foundation UK and Light Education Development are organising a Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge to climb Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingelborough. There will also be a Yorkshire 1 Peak Challenge for those who would prefer to take it a bit easier which will be approximately 7.5 miles.
When – Saturday 20th May 2017
Location – Start and finish will be Horton-in-Ribblesdale, North Yorkshire. We will be registering walkers in the farmers field in between the train station and the Crown pub (postcode is BD24 0HH.) You will also be able to park in the field all day for £3 per car. We also ask if you can please show your respects for the residents of Horton-in-Ribblesdale by keeping the noise down and ensuring you take all your litter home.

Registration cost – £10 but we are asking people to fundraise at least £100 (best ways to do this is to set up a Just Giving or Every Day Hero page or here is our Sponsorship Form Yorkshire 3&1 Peak you can print off.) Age restrictions– For the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge all walkers MUST be over 14. For the Yorkshire 1 Peak Challenge it is open to the discretion of the parent or guardian (but note it is a tough but fun 7.5 mile walk!) All walkers under 16 for both challenges must be accompanied by an adult at all time.
Timings – these are very much tbc and weather dependant.
- Registration for Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge Opens: 6am
- Registration closes & safety and fundraising briefing to Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge at Registration tent: 7am
- Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge start walk: 7.15am – 7.45am
- Registration for Yorkshire 1 Peak Challenge opens: 11.30am
- Registration closes & safety & fundraising briefing for Yorkshire 1 Peak Challenge: 12.15 pm
- Yorkshire 1 Peak Challenge start walk: 12.30 pm
- Yorkshire 1 Peak Challenge finish walk: 3.30 – 4.30pm
- Cut Off point for Yorkshire 3 Peak Challenge at Chapel le Dale : 5pm (17 mile point)
- Finish Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge: 3.15pm – 8.15pm
Please note: Both challenges involve demanding, vigorous exercise. You will be expected to walk continuously for between 8-14 hours in mountainous areas for the 3 Peaks Challenge and between 3 – 4 hours for the 1 Peak Challenge, often over difficult terrain and in variable weather conditions. Participants are responsible for making sure they are prepared for the challenge by training and bringing the required kit and equipment. Please seek medical advice to check you are fit and capable of taking part in the walk.
Essential kit list: (which you will need to carry in your back pack!)
The essential items on the kit list are required for your safety. We may not let you take part if you are missing essential equipment.
Essential kit includes: walking boots, waterproof jacket and trousers, rucksack, warm weather kit (sunscreen, sun hat, sun glasses), cold weather kit (hat, gloves, warm clothes), food and drink (2 litres), fully charged mobile phone, have access to a map with route marked on it (you can find the route here: https://www.threepeakschallenge.uk/yorkshire-three-peaks-challenge/route) and compass
Other kit you will need:
- Head torch
- Spare socks
- First aid kit
- Safety blanket
Optional kit – Walking poles, GPS and camera.
Accommodation: We advise you to book accommodation as soon as possible as it does get very busy in Spring. There are B&Bs and a camp site in Horton-in-Ribblesdale but also in the local villages which are a close drive to the start of the walk.
